Dohop API integration: from flight search to self-transfer

Dohop started in Iceland as a flight search engine and now builds virtual interlining technology for airlines and airports: connections between carriers that have no interline agreement. Here is what Dohop does today, what that means for a travel agency, and the realistic ways to sell connecting flights with PHPTRAVELS.

  • Virtual interlining
  • Built for airlines and airports
  • Custom integration on request
  • Ready alternative: Kiwi

Then and now

The Dohop you remember is not the Dohop of today

Old guides describe Dohop as a flight comparison site with an affiliate API. The company has since changed what it sells and who it sells to.

  1. 2004

A flight search engine in Reykjavík

Dohop launches as a search engine that matches routes between two airports and compares prices across airlines and agencies.

  2. Route matching

    Connections become the speciality

Finding ways to combine flights from different airlines turns into Dohop's main skill, beyond simple price comparison.

  3. Change of focus

    From consumers to airlines

Dohop moves away from consumer search and becomes a technology provider for airlines and airports.

  4. Today

    Virtual interlining platform

Airlines use Dohop to sell connections with other carriers under their own brand, with options such as connection protection and air plus rail.

Dohop's old affiliate and search APIs from the comparison era should not be assumed to exist today. Ask Dohop directly what access it offers to travel sellers.

What a self-transfer trip looks like

One itinerary, two airlines, two bookings

Virtual interlining sells flights on carriers that do not cooperate as one trip. Behind the single itinerary sit separate bookings, and someone has to take care of the connection.

  • Separate tickets

Each airline issues its own booking. Neither airline is responsible for the other leg.

  • Baggage and transfer

Unless the platform arranges a through service, travellers may collect and re-check bags at the connection.

  • Missed connections

Protection is what makes the trip sellable: if the first flight is late, the traveller is rebooked or refunded under the seller's rules.

Three kinds of connection

Interline, virtual interline and do-it-yourself

Agencies often mix these up. The difference is who issues the tickets and who is responsible when a connection breaks.

How to connect

Three realistic paths for a PHPTRAVELS agency

Dohop is not a ready connector in PHPTRAVELS, and its customers are mostly airlines and airports. These are the options that actually work for a travel seller.

  1. Ready today

    Sell self-transfer fares through Kiwi

The Kiwi.com connector is built into PHPTRAVELS and returns combinations of flights from carriers that do not cooperate, with Kiwi's own guarantee rules.

    Read the Kiwi integration guide

  2. Custom build

Connect Dohop as a custom integration

If Dohop agrees to give your business access to its platform, PHPTRAVELS builds the search, booking and servicing calls into your flights module.

    How custom integrations work

  3. No build

Point travellers to an airline's connection product

Some airlines sell Dohop-powered connections on their own sites. You can link to them or package them in content, with no integration at all.

What a Dohop build would cover

The exact scope depends on the access Dohop grants. A typical connecting-flight build has these parts.

Custom API integrationFlights

  1. 01

    Access and terms

Your agreement with Dohop, test access and the documentation it provides.

  2. 02

    Search and itineraries

Connection results merged into your flight search, labelled as self-transfer.

  3. 03

    Booking two legs

Both bookings created and confirmed together, with one trip record and one payment.

  4. 04

    Disruption and support

Delay and missed-connection cases routed to the right party under the protection rules.

  5. 05

    Testing and go-live

Test trips end to end, then live credentials, logs and alerts.

FAQ

Questions about Dohop and PHPTRAVELS

What agencies ask when an old Dohop link brings them here.

Talk to sales

No. Dohop is not one of the built-in suppliers. If Dohop gives your company access, we build it as a custom integration inside your own PHPTRAVELS installation.

Selling flights on two or more airlines that have no agreement with each other as one trip. The tickets stay separate, and the seller adds the rules and protection that make the connection safe to buy.

Yes, through a supplier that offers them. In PHPTRAVELS the ready option is the Kiwi.com connector. A direct Dohop connection is possible as a custom build if Dohop agrees to work with your business.

It depends on the product. With a protection scheme, the platform or seller rebooks or refunds under its rules. Without one, the traveller carries the risk, so your checkout must say clearly which case applies.

For connections on partner airlines, a GDS or NDC connection gives you one ticket and airline rebooking. Self-transfer fares add routes those channels cannot combine. Many agencies sell both side by side.
